چکیده

Methyl valerate (VAME), also known as methyl pentanoate, is the methyl ester of the pentanoic acid (valeric acid). VAME is usually used as fragrance in the production of beauty care, soap and laundry detergents. High purity of VAME can also be used as plasticizer. This study presents the design details of the process for the manufacture of VAME. Reactive distillation column (RDC) is used in the production process to overcome equilibrium limitation of the esterification reaction. Two products of the reaction can be separated by two strippers and a decanter. A thermally coupled design is then developed to reduce the remixing effect in the rectifying section of the RDC. The simulation results show that 30% energy saving can be achieved by using the proposed thermally coupled reactive distillation process. Two control structures are proposed with the capability of maintaining high purity product under throughput and composition disturbances.

The Investigation of Purity Improvement for the Production of Methyl Propionate in Different Types of Batch Distillation Systems

Methyl propionate, also known as methyl propanoate, is a clear colourless liquid with a characteristic odour (fruity smell and taste). In this study, the formation of methyl propionate through the esterification of propionic acid and methanol was investigated in the reactive distillation system using a conventional (CBD), single feed (SF-SBD), and double feed semi-batch distillation (DF-SBD) co...

Optimal Design of a Reactive Distillation Process for the Synthesis of Diphenyl Carbonate

Diphenyl carbonate (DPC) is a precursor in the production of polycarbonate, an important engineering thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and optical properties as well as electrical and heat resistance properties. Traditionally, DPC is synthesized by the transesterification reaction of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and phenol. In the study, phenyl acetate is used instead of phenol to react with ...

Simplified Methodology for the Design and Optimization of Thermally Coupled Reactive Distillation Systems

New intensified schemes have been recently proposed as an attempt to reduce energy requirements and equipment costs in reaction−separation processes. A design methodology for thermally coupled reactive distillation systems is proposed in this work. To design the columns, a method based on the Fenske−Underwood−Gilliland (FUG) equations is proposed and tested. The FUG equations, the mass and ener...
